Fall Leaves

Fall is the best.  We have never had leaves to rake before since we have always lived in new builds.  Not the case anymore...we have more leaves than what we know to do with in our new house. The girls are loving it. Look at the pure joy on their faces...
Just add this to the list of 17,283 reasons I love this season.

Pumpkin Fest

One of the great things about living in a new town is that we get explore all the local events and festivals for the first time.  We have been looking forward to the Huron Pumpkin Festival since we moved here in August.  Because, as you know, we love fall and we love festivals.

Some YL staff friends from Cleveland came to join us and we all had brunch together at our house before we headed to the boat basin for the activities.   The girls had a blast, but being that we live in small town America now, it didn't take long to see everything there was to see.  With the extra time, we decided to introduce our friends to the frozen deliciousness that is 'Pied Piper'.  Even on a chilly Fall afternoon it brings happiness.
Playing a GIANT game of Ker Plunk.

The 'Island Jungle Petting Zoo'...which feature exactly zero animals from the jungle or an island.  There were some crazy goats though who absolutely loved carrots.  Makes me miss Lily.
We have never seen a Kangaroo at a petting zoo before.  I guess there is a first time for everything.  And I guess, technically, Kangaroos come from an island...
Painting faces with pumpkins and painting pumpkins with faces.

After our friends left, we drove to Medina for the annual chicken barbecue.  It was nice to see some family we haven't seen in a while and the colors of Fall were just beginning to make an appearance.

Fun times on the farm.

Crucial Catch: Mini Cheer Night

The Huron HS cheerleaders put on a clinic for the home game tonight again Margaretta.  All the girls got to cheer and raise money for breast cancer research.  The even did hair and make up before the game.  Hannah didn't want to participate, but Alyssa was in Heaven.  Obviously, her love for cheering was not left in Columbus.

Her hair was adorable.  She felt so cool having a high school cheerleader doing it for her!
A little pre-game photo opp.
Hannah was so super cute watching Alyssa and her friends cheer.  She was so proud of her big sister!
She is a natural.  Cheering is in her blood.
They cheered the Tigers on to a major victory over the Polar Bear!

The Call {Part Two: Waiting & Rejection}

-->
Waiting is really hard.  And, Dan and I are not good at waiting.

When we first got the call from Rich about a possible area, it was in the one state that I had literally prayed against…West Virginia.  Seriously.  West Vir.gin.ia.  Ugh.  But, after listening to the opportunities in the area we agreed to go down and meet with the committee.  Surprisingly, it went well.  The people were great, the job seemed just right and Huntington wasn’t as bad as we thought. I was only a three hour drive so we actually though it might just work out for our family. After the meeting we heard fairly quickly that the committee really liked us and wanted us to move on in the process. We were willing and figured move to WV was in our future. But then there was a long silence. Waiting. We didn’t hear from them for almost two months.  When we finally did hear from them, it was not the news we expected. They decided to go another way…someone with experience ‘on staff’.  We were caught off guard.  Even though they assured us it wasn’t personal and they all really liked us, we were both hurt and felt a little betrayed.  I took it really personally.  We had put our hearts on the line.  Now what were we supposed to do?

We didn’t have to wait long {surprisingly} before they called with another option, Lehigh Valley in Eastern Pennsylvania.  We almost didn’t even consider it because of the distance…8 hours from family and friends.  I was even more unsure about it than Huntington, but I was willing to go and see.  Again, the people were great.  In fact, the entire area was great.  It almost felt like home and we could really see ourselves raising our family there.  The distance was a challenge, but it was still within a days drive.  With the opportunities for ministry, it seemed like God was actually calling there.  As hard as it would be to leave family, we were ready and willing to say yes.  But, like we had been told before, it has to be a yes for everyone.  And even though the regional director wanted us and we were on board, there were doubts in the committees mind that we were the right ones for such a big job.  They loved us personally…just didn’t believe in us. OUCH. Rejected again. Back to square one. It really stung that time.  We had worn our hearts on our sleeves and laid it all out there…and for what? I was confused because we thought we knew God's plan, but we got it wrong.  Friends kept reminding me that it didn't surprise God.  That He is sovereign and that it just wasn’t the place He had for us.  I didn’t want to hear that. I lost all confidence in myself.  I wanted to be obedient to God, but I also so desperately wanted to be able to out roots down somewhere.  I didn't understand and I was so sick of waiting.

You know what is harder than waiting?

Rejection.

We had been rejected twice now.  I was done. It was too hard and I did not want to do it anymore.

Yet, just as school was out for summer, we got a call about another area…this time a very small college town called Indiana, Pennsylvania.  While it was closer to family than the previous one, I had a bad feeling about it from the beginning.  Nothing about it felt right.  We went to visit anyway and my initial feelings were quickly confirmed.  I won’t go into details, but it was kind of a disaster.  Clearly, the Lord was not calling us to the Christmas Tree capital of the world and I was fine with that.

Three strikes and I was definitely out.  We gave it our best shot and we ‘failed’.  Now we were left to pick up the pieces of what we *thought* we were called to and move on with our lives.

By this time it was mid-June. We were physically, emotionally and spiritually tired, so we decided to call it quits for the year.  We were frustrated.  We wanted to enjoy the summer and needed to prepare for the Fall.  Rich mentioned an area called the Firelands in northern Ohio to us, and that they would possibly need somebody the following Spring, but we just weren’t sure.  We didn’t want to force it and we needed a break to reevaluate the call we thought we heard.
Over the next few months we settled into a routine in our teaching careers and continued to lead YL in Gahanna.  Slowly, but surely, the Lord began to reveal reasons why we were still in Columbus and the desire to move away began to fade.  In me, the pendulum had swung the other direction and I didn't want to go anywhere anymore. I felt like we gave it a valient effort, but being missionaries just wasn't for us. Dan had a few conversations with staff and we would frequently talk about this ‘calling’, but weren’t really sure how to process it or proceed in the future.  Dan was still interested in talking with YL about new possibilities in the coming Spring, but I was hurt by rejection and pretty bitter towards YL.  For the first time in two years, we weren't on the same page. I pulled away and it created distance between us.  We were at a crossroads.  We either continue to pursue it or we leave it behind forever.  So, we did what most indecisive people would do…we just kind of ignored it and hoped it would go away on its own.  Honestly, I was barely hanging on. So when Rich approached Dan at Leader Weekend and told him there just weren’t any openings and it probably was going to happen this year, I was silently cheering. Victory. I had won.  Or so I thought…

The Call {Part One: The Seed}

It seemed like our life was the ‘American Dream’. We were both working as teachers, had two beautiful daughters, a happy marriage, a new house in the suburbs and couple of dogs.  We were pretty comfortable.  That’s our lives hit a wall. We started to get restless in our careers and other stresses were beginning to weigh on us.  Dan had been unable to get a new job teaching in a public school system and was ‘stuck’ at his charter school without room for advancement.  And, even though I loved Gahanna, I wasn’t loving my job anymore.  We were just maintaining. Then, in the Spring, the wall began to crumble.  My teaching position was eliminated, leaving me unemployed and our future uncertain.  It was terrifying and it was humbling.  We were both almost 30 years old and neither of us really knew what we ‘wanted to be when we grow up’.  We obviously did not know it at the time, but that single event would serve as a catalyst for the next three years.

That summer Dan had been meeting with our pastor regularly and after talking about future career plans he asked Dan if he had ever thought about full time ministry.  If you have spent more than 8 minutes with us, you know the answer to this question…especially since we have been involved with Young Life for the last 15 years.  So, Dan told him he had many times, but that has always seemed impossible and that it would most likely mean moving away so we never pursued it.  He challenged Dan to think about where He saw himself in 5 years and to start having conversations with people about full time ministry opportunities.  Shortly after, Dan met with the metro director of Columbus YL.  Even though He said he would love to hire him, he had no room on staff in Columbus and mentioned a few other places around the state.   We were discouraged, wrote YL off as an option and moved on.  I got my real estate license, was recalled back to my teaching position in Gahanna and Dan continued to look for teaching jobs around Central Ohio. It seemed like we were moving away pieces of the broken wall out of the way.

New Year’s Eve changed that.

At a party with old college friends, the suggestion of YL staff was once again brought up to us.  We explained why we didn’t see it as a viable option and they understood, but something about that conversation stirred up the passion in both our hearts.  Leaving that party we talked about the possibility that maybe God had not closed that door and we started to search our souls. Is this something God is really calling us to do? What about our families? Could we really move away…we have both lived in Columbus our entire lives. How would it work financially?  We didn’t have any answers, but we did want to leave room for the Lord to move. So after a lot of prayer and consideration, Dan interviewed with the regional staff.  Then we waited to see what positions would open and where they thought a good fit might be.  Still unsure and with a lot of unanswered questions we waited…

The MISSING Year

Our blog has been a little {or a lot} silent for a while.  Not because we haven't had anything to share...but, because it has been difficult for me to put anything into writing.  I am working on doing that now, so over the next few days you will {hopefully} see the bigger picture.

While a part of me would really love to forget the the last year and a half...or have a mulligan, the other part of me is thankful for everything we have walked through.  I really need to remember.  Mostly because I need to remember that I am not in control...and it's a damn good thing. I need to remember His faithfulness and His sovereignty.  I don't know exactly what our future looks like.  And, contrary to what my head thinks, I don't need to know what the future holds.  In fact, knowing the future would rob me of my present experiences.

I. Do. Not. Need. To. Know.

I thought I did, but I don't.

I don't need to know because He already has it worked out...and, because He loves me.

What I need is hope.  It is the only thing stronger than fear. I need a hope that is real. A hope that is firm and secure. A hope that will never fail me.  A hope that can only be found in a relationship with Jesus. That hope is an anchor for my soul.

Alyssa's TSwift Bash

Since Alyssa has become mildly obsessed with Taylor Swift, she decided she wanted to have a music themed party and cake.  I have to say, I am pretty darn proud of this cake.  It took hours and tested my patience, but it turned out better than I thought it would.  And Alyssa love it, so it was totally worth it.  Except now I feel like the bar is set waaaaaaaay to high for the next cake I have to make :/  Here are some pictures of the cake:
For the party itself, we had planned on swimming.  Mother Nature didn't cooperate though, so she wanted it to be like a YL club (she was made to be a staff kid).  Dan ran a series of mixer and call up games for her friends, we had a dance party and a photo booth with a red carpet.  I think she had a pretty good day!
